Attractions

Kanon Kopje
A hill, which commands fine views of the Barolong village. The name dates back to the days of conflict between the Tshid Barolong and the Boers in 1882. It is a defensive fort built during the Warren expedition during the Anglo-Boer war of 1899 - 1902.
Mafikeng Museum
Housed in the old Town Hall, Mafikeng Museum features many reminders of the Siege of Mafikeng. In addition, items focusing on the Barolong people and Bushmen (San) are featured in the museum.
Mmabatho Botanic Park
This attractive park with a Victorian theme specialises in the indigenous flora of South Africa, divided into five main plant regions.

St. John the Evangelist Anglican Church
Designed by Sir Herbert Baker, the church was built in 1903. An inscription on the foundation stone reads "To the glory of God and in memory of those who died during the Siege of Mafikeng and as an act of thanksgiving for the relief of the town."
Imperial Reserve
Formerly the administrative offices of three successive governments, the imposing building today serves as the police headquarters.

Manyane Game Lodge & Botsalano Game Reserve
The Manyane Game Lodge features a lion enclosure and crocodile camp. 30km west of the city, the Botsalano Game Reserve is a popular attraction for game viewing.
Lotlamoreng Cultural Reserve
This reserve is home to a cultural village, recreational area and is also a demarcated waterfall sanctuary.
Garona
The western suburbs of Mafikeng house the provicial parliament and the impressive government offices known today as Garona.

Moving to the east of Mafikeng is this inland diving venue, which has a vast underwater network of caves, used principally for diving instruction.

Directions from Johannesburg via Magaliesburg to Tusk Mmabatho Casino Resort Approximate Distance Mafikeng Airport + - 17 km Johanesburg 310km Pretoria 340 km Gaborone 150km # N1 to Roodepoort. # At 14th Avenue turn-off, take M47 (Next off ramp after Beyers Naude). # At traffic lights, turn right. # At second set traffic lights (Hillfox sign) turn right onto N14 to TARLTON. # At 4-way stop go straight over the 4-way stop with (Sasol Garage being on your left) continue straight on N14 to TARLTON # T-Junction, turn right. (Sasol Garage on your left.) # Follow N14 to VENTERSDROP. # Turn left; sign will indicate VENTERSDORP 110 Km N14. # 4-Way, turn right in the direction of Rustenburg signpost reads (Rustenburg & Ventersdorp). # Pass through the little town MAGALIESBURG over the railway line up the hill take slip way left to Koster R509 # Carry on straight through DERBY, a little town before KOSTER. # Carry on straight through KOSTER follow signs to LICHTENBURG R52 # Enter LICHTENBURG. # Pass over the two 4-way stops through LICHTENBURG town. # At T-Junction, turn right-pass over two 4-way stops. # Carry on straight-turn left into Swart Street. # At 4-Way stop (BP Garage on right corner). # Go straight to MAFIKENG - R505 signpost. Please note that Mafikeng becomes R503.
